Just shy of 1k ~ the number of words I have written today. Better than a slap in the face with a wet fish.

And it's snowing again... you'd be hard pressed to make an eyebrow for a very small snowman, but it's so pretty.

I knew there was a reason to buy a newspaper. Yesterday's Guardian entertained me for several hours & this morning I abandoned books in favour of reading a couple of the longer articles. One, concerning itself with the controversies & faction fighting in which the Church of England is presently mired, (gay clergy & women bishops) gifted me the word, conniptions, a pattern of letters I have hitherto not come across.

The piece was quoting one Matthew Knight, Southwark Cathedral's administrator, who is gay & liberal & goes to a conservative high church in Brighton, not because he agrees with its vicar but because he likes the music & the liturgy: "I don't care if they disapprove. I don't believe the church is here to tell me what to do. The Anglican church is not my moral compass.  It annoys me that the church is so obsessed with what people do in bed.'  The author of the article went on to say, 'Yes, well, that sort of view would give some churchmen these days conniptions.'

*Reaches for dictionary in anticipation!*  For those as lacking in education as am I, it means a fit of rage or hysteria. Conniptions is officially my new favourite word. Ironically, I'm too happy about the dusting of snow to conjure a conniption; too jaded by arch hypocrite of Canterbury, Rowan Williams' lamentable silence on the proposed legislation in the Ugandan parliament that would mandate the death penalty for some homosexuals.

I shall confine myself to contentment & save a worthwhile conniption for another day...

My boss at work moved house last Wednesday, and I was checking her e-mails for her while she was without phone or internet service. The other people who allegedly work in our organization knew this would be happening (all of their names have been changed in this story).

At about 2 pm an e-mail came through from Jane informing my boss, Amanda, that reservations had been made for the staff Christmas luncheon at the new and hoidy-toidy restaurant at the Museum. Also copied on the e-mail were William and Mark (who doesn’t technically work for us). Please note too that neither Jane nor William work in my office – Jane pretends to work from home, and William is based in another city. Mark inhabits one of our rooms here in ____, but was in fact away that day, so I was completely alone last Wednesday.

This is the fourth year in a row that I have been excluded from the Christmas lunch for staff, and I am extremely pissed off about it. Please read last years LJ entry at http://tizianaj.livejournal.com/54394.html for my previous take on it and more details, but this has just fuelled my grumbling resentment.

I had to phone Amanda about another e-mail anyway, and so I told her about the invitation. Please note that she is not the one excluding me – in fact, they would prefer not to invite her either, and in the past have deliberately scheduled their lunch on days when they knew she would not be able to attend. However, she writes the cheques and so it’s prudent to at least pretend to invite Amanda. She immediately asked if I had been included in the invitation, and I told her that no, I had not. She said she wasn’t going either then, and she would speak to William about it once she was back online.

It’s not that I want to have lunch with these people – I don’t think I will ever be that hungry – but the fact that they go out of their way to not invite me really rankles.

Well, Amanda did explain to William that it’s not nice of them not to invite me to a staff luncheon, especially on a day when they knew perfectly well that I was checking Amanda’s e-mails and would see the invitation. Furthermore, she complained about the time and date, saying that neither she nor I could attend anyway, since we weren’t consulted as to our availability. William, who lacks any sort of a spine, backpedalled, apologized and agreed that no, the fact that I hadn’t been invited wasn’t right, and he offered to take Amanda and myself out to lunch some time in January.

As little as I want to spend time with the man, I am looking forward to eating in a good restaurant – Jane picks food establishments based on whether or not her snooty friends might see her there, and the quality of the food is the least of her worries. Chances are very good that the food will suck at the lunch on Tuesday.

The next day Amanda told me that shortly after her conversation with William, Jane sent her an e-mail wanting to know whether or not she should extend an invitation to me as well. Amanda told her it would be best to leave me alone under the circumstances. Sure bitch, extend an invitation after you already know I won’t be able to make the lunch anyway.

I can’t WAIT to get started in my new career, and the hell out of this place.

With Her Own Eyes

Summary: Mary Macdonald watches the breakup of another of Lily Evan’s friendships.

Warning: Emo!Snape.

The fire bites, the fire bites. Bites
to the little death. Bites
till she comes to nothing. Bites
on her own sweet tongue. She goes on. Biting.

Is anyone planning...

  • Dec. 19th, 2009 at 10:19 PM
on going to the Solstice drum jam on Monday night at the Cedar Cultural Center? I went last year, but it wasn't as much fun because I didn't see anyone there I knew, and I'm hesitant right now to spend $10 on a ticket if I won't see anyone there I know again this year.

See my pretty new Riptide Christmas icon from [info]elmyraemilie! I happened to notice a post of hers a week or so ago, offering to make a certain number of santa hatted icons for the first few people to ask for them!

Thank you again, [info]elmyraemilie, so much! It's lovely!

I'm really hoping to get to con.txt again next year and see you again -- and I'll remember to wear the earrings you made for me, too!

I Blame the Parents

  • Dec. 19th, 2009 at 11:19 AM
Had I not been born in 1944 in a time when seasons did as they were told, I might not have grown up to love snow.  I'm sorry (a bit) but I'm excited! When I opened the bedroom curtains this morning it was practicing; barely there but oh yes ~ snow!  My smile made me laugh at myself!  And later, as I was chatting on the phone with Maralyn, who lives forty minutes away so we pretty much share a view, we let out a mutual squeal as snow began to fall a bit more vigorously.  It's stopped again, but the sky speaks volumes!

I can't wait!  Come on you penguins, if you think you're hard enough!

The good birds have officially adopted my bird table.  It's busy out there ~ after a week of considered reconnaissance, they've decided to move in.  And Maz has given me a tip about the frozen water dish ~ apparently all that is required is a drop of glycerine.  I shall buy some later.

I write & read.

Monkey had some sort of 24-hour bug, but seems to be better. We'll see how he's doing tomorrow.

Actually want to go camping this Summer. Used to think I hated it. Still not too comfy sleeping without an air mattress though.

Home alone tonight, except for sleeping kids, and the animals.

Gonna go read till I pass out, I think.
