Frederick and Ned
I decided I need to do some more reading on the 1930s, as I work to revise and polish Part Two of Ned. So when I was at the library, earlier today, I did a search in the library catalog and found something that looks like exactly what I had in mind: Daily Life in the United States, 1920-1940: How Americans Lived Through the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression, by David E. Kyvig. Timelines of Big Historical Events are easy enough to find, but when writing a story centered around the mundane daily lives of a couple over the years, I really want a history that focuses on mundane daily life during an era. Of course a few Big Historical Events punctuate the story--it'd be lame as all hell to ignore them altogether--but they're not the focus.

And yes, I know, Frederick and Ned are Englishmen, not Americans, but they live in America from the 1920s onwards, so, blee. To borrow a favorite expression of [info]jemby. I'm still trying to figure out if they eventually became citizens or would have lived their whole lives as resident aliens. I don't know if it's really important to figure it out, so for now I won't.

By the way, is anyone out there enjoying the posts about Bing Crosby and his music? It's not like I'm an obsessive fan of Bing or anything, but he's one of those nostalgia figures, even if I prefer Tropicana or Florida's Natural orange juice rather than Minute Maid. I realize they aren't really the kind of posts that invite real discussion, or even inspire comments, but I'm curious whether my f-list is enjoying them or hating them or just thinks they're boring as all f**k.

Whatever the case, I'll still write whatever rambles across my mind on a given day. I'm just curious. ;-)

I rather enjoy Der Bingle posts.

I'd completely forgotten about the OJ commercials, but do remember the yearly Crosby family Christmas specials. His Christmas album still gets a listen or two around the holidays in my home. Hearing "Christmas in Killarney" & "Mele Kalikimaka" takes to some childhood memories from way back.

Thanks for letting me know. ;-) Of course I'm writing them mainly because they've become relevant to my novel in progress, but I feel less fearful, now, that I'm boring the readers of my journal in the process.

I remember the Christmas specials, too--though I didn't know, as a kid, that that was his second family--but it's those laid-back Bing in a Golf Hat Minute Maid commercials that really got burned on my brain, as far as his TV presence goes. And of course the Christmas album is classic--"Christmas in Killarney" is about as corny as it gets! Lots of fun.

I remember Bing Crosby and Bob Hope in my childhood. They were rather obligatory. But the people who were really meaningful to kid me were Jack Benny and Fred Allen. I loved listening to the radio. Sunday afternoon and night were BIG radio listening time.

I'm too young to remember Jack Benny and Fred Allen, but I do remember seeing Bob Hope and not getting what the point of his jokes was. I'm not sure if it's because he was getting very old and losing his timing by then, or if it's because he was drawing on an older school of humor that was beyond the ken of my generation. Mainly, I remember that TV Guide always caricaturized his nose to make it look ridiculously long and pointy. ;-)

Anyway, thanks for chiming in!

I don't have particular comments on the Bing posts, but I do read them. Which is more than I can say for 1/2 my flist at this point.

Thanks for letting me know. I figured they were the kind of posts people would read without commenting on (exception: my sister [info]jemby, who can always be counted on to come up with something, however strange and OT) but I'm content if I know people are enjoying them.
